Ukrainian Defenders Begin Rehabilitation in New York

A new group of Ukrainian defenders has arrived in New York to receive prosthetic care and rehabilitation.

Vitalii, 36, and Hennadii, 47, were injured while defending Ukraine in the Donetsk region. Their arrival in New York brings hope not only for themselves, but also for many other veterans awaiting treatment.

Before the war, Vitalii worked in Germany, but he returned to Ukraine in 2022 to defend his homeland. His injury resulted in the amputation of his leg. Despite this challenge, he maintains an optimistic attitude and hopes to return to his hobbies of table tennis and billiards.

Hennadii, a former financial sector worker and father of a 17-year-old son, was injured near Krasnohorivka while evacuating wounded comrades. His dedication to helping others, even in the face of severe injury, inspires our team.

The defenders will undergo comprehensive prosthetic and rehabilitation therapy at Orthopedic Arts Laboratory. The treatment program will last several months, during which the veterans will work intensively to regain mobility and independence.

The prosthetics and rehabilitation will be provided by Dr. Stephan Manucharian, Clinical Director of Orthopedic Arts Laboratory, Inc. and a board member of Kind Deeds. He is a certified prosthetist-orthotist and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists (FAAOP). Dr. Manucharian’s clinic specializes in creating custom prosthetics for upper and lower limbs using state-of-the-art technologies and materials.

The defenders’ journey was made possible through the joint efforts of donors and organizational partners, including St. Demetrius Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, singer Assia Ahhatt, renowned Ukrainian boxer Serhii Derevianchenko, and the Consulate General of the Republic of Lithuania in New York.

Kind Deeds continues to work closely with medical institutions and international partners to support Ukrainian veterans in need of advanced prosthetic care. Since the program’s inception, 50 Ukrainian defenders have received high-tech prosthetics and completed rehabilitation. Currently, more than 200 wounded soldiers remain on the waiting list for prosthetic treatment.
