Two Ukrainian Heroes Complete Rehabilitation in New York
This summer, two extraordinary Ukrainian defenders — Yurii Saiko and Mykhailo Kityk — completed their prosthetics and rehabilitation program in New York with Kind Deeds. Thanks to the support of our donors and partners, they are returning home stronger, more confident, and ready to embrace a new chapter in life.
Their Stories
Yurii Saiko joined Ukraine’s defense at the age of 19 and became a marine. In March 2022, during the defense of Mariupol, he suffered severe injuries — losing his leg and carrying shrapnel wounds, including one to his heart that was removed only after he returned from 43 days in Russian captivity. Despite everything, Yurii continues to advocate for Ukrainian prisoners of war, as an ambassador of Heart of Azovstal initiative.

Mykhailo Kityk was a teacher of mathematics, computer science, and technology in western Ukraine before the war. When the full-scale invasion began, he volunteered for the Ukrainian Ground Forces. As a junior sergeant, he was badly injured during a Russian assault, resulting in the loss of his leg above the knee. His dream is to return to service, run again, and inspire others to rebuild a better future.

Rehabilitation Journey in New York
Over three months in New York, Yurii and Mykhailo went through prosthetic fitting and intensive daily rehabilitation with Dr. Stephan Manucharian and the dedicated team at Orthopedic Arts. Yurii and Mykhailo were was fitted with a new functional prosthesis (C Leg).

Their stay in the U.S. was not only about physical recovery. They:
- Shared their stories at public rallies, calling for the release of Ukrainian POWs.
- Met with U.S. officials, diplomats, and international organizations, including the Embassy of Ukraine in Washington, the UN Permanent Missions of Ukraine and Lithuania, and the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America.
- Were honored by the New York State Assembly for their courage and service.
- Joined Ukrainian community events, from the New Wave School festival in Brooklyn to a visit with parishioners of Gurdian, Angel Roman Catholic Church.
- Took part in adaptive water skiing with Leaps of Faith, experiencing freedom and joy on the water.
